Happy Birthday Mother Goose!

Yes, Happy Birthday Mother Goose!

No, it is not Mother Goose, Mother Goose. You know it is Mother Goose, the mother of Goose. Yes, today is my mom's birthday. For her birthday, my brother, sister, and I came up with the best plan to surprise her. The plan was to surprise her. Duh! The plan begins with my sister's part. Her part was to fly up from San Diego. After doing her part, it was my turn. My part was to figure out if my mom was going to go to work on her birthday. After pestering my mom on yesterday, November 29, I told my sister that the plan way going to go through. The entire plan was to have my sister fly up from San Diego, then I would have to pick her up from the airport where I would drive her to my mom's workplace. Once we had gotten in the vicinity of the workplace, my sister would call her and ask if our mom had received the flowers that she had sent. After doing that I would get out of the car and go to my mom's office and ask if she got the flowers, where my sister would then come out from behind me and say "Hi mom, surprise".

Today, the plan did not go as planned, rather it was better than we expected. My sister's flight was delayed, but in the midst of this potential disaster, it turned out that it would help us. Knowing that my sister was suppose to arrive at 3:30P.M., I left the house at 12:00P.M.. After, that I received a call from her where she told me that her flight had been delayed. My dad then called me to ask where my brother and I were. My sister did not want to bring my dad into the plan, so I had to tell him that I was running errands for my mom. My dad then called me back a second time telling me that my aunt needed to go to her lawyers and needed to be picked up. I proceeded to my aunt's house, picked her up and dropped her off in the downtown area.

The time was around 4:15P.M already and my sister was just getting of the airplane. My sister then called me and told me that our mom kept calling her asking where the flowers were. After I picked up my sister; my brother, sister, girlfriend, and I went to the florists around the workplace of my mom. We bought her a bouquet of roses. We drove up as planned but did not call her. We walked into the building, through the hallways, and upon arriving at the front desk my mom is waiting there for her flowers. As we were walking in, she did not notice us until we got closer and told her happy birthday. She still did not see my sister until my sister handed her the roses. My mom's surprised reactions turned out to be "Oh, thank yo... Why are you here?" My mom started to cry because she never expected my sister to come up for her birthday.

My dad, who also did not know about the plan had to be surprised too. My mom and sister came up with the plan of leaving my sister in the car after we had gone home. My sister hid behind one of the seats because we have three rows of seats in our Sequoia. My mom, brother, girlfriend, and I sat in the car before my dad. When my dad came into the car, my sister stuck out her head and said "Hi dad, What's going on?" She was then greeted with "Where did you come from? What are you doing here?"

Goose's Birthday

Today, November 15, 2007, is my birthday. Today I turn twenty-two years old. How I wish those were months again. I celebrated my birthday by doing an all week celebration. It began on Sunday, I took off with my girlfriend and cousins, and we went to Lake Tahoe. From there we celebrated by going to the snow areas. When we got there we built snowmen and fought in the snow. We also built a small ramp that we took small sleds and slid off of. After hanging out in the snow for five hours sliding off the ramp, throwing snow balls, and making snowmen, we decided that we would finish up there and go to the casinos in Tahoe. This all happened after they buried me in snow. When we were driving there I figured out that I had not brought my license.

Upon driving to the casino and finding out that my driver’s license, I figured that I was not going to be let into the casino. Later on, after being able to get into the casino without an I.D. other than my selective service card that I had. After all that, it turns out that I did not really need my I.D., because I remember that at my Vegas vacation over the summer I had applied to own one of those casino rewards cards and that it would allow me to go around the casino without really having an I.D. The card allows me to do that because they would not issue one to me if I was not twenty-one. Well I spent more than I was supposed to, but hey it was my birthday celebration, might as well spend go all out.

On Monday, we kept the celebration going by going out to Dave and Busters. There we had another great time playing games and doing whatever we twenty-one year old or older do at a place like that. We hit the bar and drank for most of the time and of course competed in the basketball shoot out game against sober people. The funny part about this whole day was that the sober people still were losing to the ones drinking. By that time we already about 6 shots of alcohol and 3 beers, and we were going against random people. In the end, of the day we won a lot of tickets and were drunk.

Tuesday and Wednesday were both days that were not to eventful but it was still celebrated with presents that were given to me. One of my friends baked me a cookie, a big cookie.

Today was the best day because after school I went with my family to Chevy’s and got my Mexican sombrero that I have been wanting for so long. My parents paid for the dinner and I just had a great time.

Play the Game

When I was young I played the game. Now that I am older I want to play in the game.

This past Monday I was sitting in the library studying for a midterm in Local Government class. After skimming and studying through the first four chapters of the ten that I had to read, I decided that a break was needed. On my break I logged onto the Yahoo! Website and started looking through the headline news. I start by going through the “Featured”, “Entertainment”, and “Sports” tabs first. When I do this I just look at the four headline news makers. After that I scroll down and look at the tabs at the bottom. The “In The News”, “World”, and “Local” tabs. This is usually what I do on a daily basis to stay current on what going on; however, this day was different.

On Monday I decided to look at the “Video” tab. The top headline maker was “Human Tetris”. This seemed very interesting because when I was younger, I loved to play the game “Tetris” on the Nintendo game system. Seeing the name “Tetris” it made me want to watch what this “Human Tetris” was all about. When I clicked on the link, I started to watch the video. The first few seconds were to show how to play, it looked interesting enough for me to want to watch it some more. When I was watching it, I could not stop laughing because the way the people looked when they were playing the game. (http://video.yahoo.com/video/play?vid=1366142&fr=&cache=1)

To be honest, I would love to fly over there just to go play that same game. To me it looks really fun even though I might look stupid playing it, I feel that it would be totally worth the trip just to go play that game. Yes, I know you must think it is a stupid idea to do that but from what I know is that you got to try to have fun sometime.

Experience of A Lifetime

Last semester, I was ready to take PolS 100w taught by Professor Edwards. When I arrived the morning of the first class meeting, I was really bummed because I did not think any of my friends were going to be in the class. When class began, I told myself “this is a required class that I need to have, just get it over with and move on to the next classes.” A few minutes later, two of my friends walk in. Professor Edwards began taking roll, as she did; my friends and I noticed that there was a large amount of students in the class. Among the three of us, two were already enrolled in the class. After Professor Edwards called roll, she asked if there were any graduating seniors in the class that were not called. Many hands moved into the air, professor looked and said, “Are there any students willing to give up their place in this class so I could accommodate these seniors?” Everyone in the class knew that no one would be willing to give up their place. My friends and I decided that there was no possibility for our other friend to get into the class, so we agreed that we would give up our places in the class and take PolS 100w in the Fall.

Because I agreed to give up my enrollment in the PolS 100w class, I needed another class. I could not decide which class I would take. There were so many classes to choose from; however, I figured that classes had already started most would be filled. As I was trying to determine which class I would be taking, one of the friends that was in the class told me that there was an opening in the class that he was taking. The decision was that I would take PolS 152B, Model United Nations, with Professor Montojo.

In the beginning, I was very skeptical about this class being that I had never heard of such a class and the fact that my friend was explaining what the professor expected from the students. As class went on I got more comfortable with the work load, but was still worried about the other part of the class. The other part of the class that I was worried about was the going to Burlingame and taking part of a simulation that other schools were going to participate in.

When it became that time in April when we would go to the Hyatt in Burlingame, we had a guest speaker come into the class. I have long forgotten his name but I will always remember what he said. "Hey, when you go there, make new friends and always keep in contact with them. I’ve kept in contact with the people that I met there and they have been great friends. Hey for you single people out there this might be the chance you get to hook up with someone, hey one may even turn out to become your husband or wife." When I heard this, all I could do was laugh. I really thought that what he said was stupid.

When the time of the Simulation Conference came I was ready to go but still scared of how I would sound in front of these other schools. The simulations began and afraid to speak, I felt like I just wanted to crawl under the table and hide. After the first caucus, a break for fifteen minutes, I was relieved that I got out of there. Coming back from the caucus, I still felt the same way. A few more speeches were given and then someone called for a caucus once again. This time was different, there were people going around trying to come up with a “Resolution Statement”. My objective for this was finding the other two from San Jose State and talk to them because I still was scared. More time had passed and it was time to go home, I felt a sigh of relief because it was time to sleep and get out of the room. I think I might have even been the first one to get out of the room and I was sitting in the very front.

The next day came and I was still afraid. When simulation began I had the same feeling as I came to the conference. Later on that day, a caucus for thirty minutes was called; one person came to talk to me and asked me about my views on the topic, after she had heard what I had to say, she called over a few more, this was her schoolmates and country’s allies. We began talking and I was feeling better about the situation. From that point it was a beginning of a new friendship.

Day three came and I was ready to tackle whatever was put in front of me. I worked hard during the caucuses trying to write those Resolution Statements based on the topic. Working with my new found friends was fun. Later on in the day, the Chairperson called an end to the day; however, they said that it was okay for the Committee to work on their Resolution Statements outside of simulation. I worked on Resolution Statements with my new friends, and we did not sleep most of the night and I did not come back to my room until three o’clock in the morning working on our proposal. I did not feel scared anymore.

Day four, this was our moment. Our proposal that my friends and I drafted along with other “countries” was put to the test and we had to defend it. We all stood up there trying to defend what we proposed and everyone liked what we had to say. Later on it came to a vote, remarkably our resolution statement passed, eighty percent of the countries voted for our statement.

At the end of the conference, two of the three countries, Bangladesh and Iran, that were represented by San Jose State took home certificates. After all the hard work of writing the necessary paper work and late nights working with my new friends and working with my fellow Bangladesh diplomats, we took home a certificate that we did not think we would have a chance at having. Bangladesh's diplomats were (From Left To Right) JaMa DeGuzman, Sergio Jimenez, Jenniffer Candelas, Corinna Reyes, and Angelina Rocha.

After the conference had ended, I got emails and calls from my friends that I made over at the simulation. My friends are from the Philippines, we have kept in contact since we met. After the conference, they all went their separate ways exploring the United States. Some stayed in San Jose. It is almost seven months now since the conference; I still keep in contact with them. We have become really good friends and when I think back to the guest speaker’s quote, I still laugh because it came true that I would have great friends. This is one of the reasons why I wish they offered Model U.N. once again. This is where crew T.G. began too. Because of 5109, this was where it all began. This was an experience that will last a lifetime.

Model United Nations, 5109, and crew T.G. are only the beginnings of newly opened doors.
